    Legitimizing Everyday Tradition: The Spatial Narrative of Modernity in Cairene Old Quarters

    This article examines the path being taken toward legitimizing a modern spatial quality in Bulaq, one of Cairo’s oldest quarters. It documents how its historic fabric, elements of which date to the fourteenth century, is being progressively refashioned according to policies and visions that have engendered debate about the management and control of heritage. Specifically, the article questions the extent to which official attempts to create a new spatial quality in the quarter conflict with more popular appreciation of and concern for the quarter’s long history, traditional qualities, and structure. By investigating government correspondence and meeting reports, and through interviews with area residents, the article seeks to uncover the divergent meanings of legitimation with regard to officially “undesirable” areas of authentic urban fabric in the city

    Moving Out of Conflict: Negotiating Social Identity in Response to Segregation in Northern Ireland

    This paper examines the impact of territoriality on young people’s everyday experiences in Northern Ireland’s segregated communities. It shows how urban encounters are reproduced through negotiating differences and the ways in which living in divided communities escalates moods of social inequality and spatial imbalances. The empirical study undertaken in the city of Derry shows how individuals and community groups position and identify themselves under the impact of social segregation. Building on Gordon Allport’s (1954) theories of contact, I explain how people in Derry have established their own sense of belonging, of who they are, based on their group memberships which eventually became an important source of pride and selfesteem. They also presented their own intertextual references as a cause of routine survival and belonging, allowing them to be more constructive about their future. Under deeply rooted segregation in Northern Ireland, the young generations are sought to provide lasting change to foster peace and integration between the two communities

    Modafinil dependence: A case with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

    Modafinil is generally known as a drug with low addiction potential. There are few case reports in the literature demonstrating that Modafinil, stated being capable of diminishing symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), causes addiction. In the present article a Modafinil addicted ADHD case, consuming usurious doses (5,000 mg/per day) of Modafinil is presented. The case presented to our psychiatry outpatient clinic due to: requirement of in taking high dose Modafinil in order to achieve the initial effects, difficulty in obtaining the drug, irritability, anxiousness, sleep irregularities, fatigue and unpleasant vivid dreams when he did not use the drug. It was realized that the patient, himself increased doses of Modafinil incrementally, in order to keep its effects on attention symptoms at the same level. It has to be kept in mind that ADHD patients can develop Modafinil addiction. It is necessary to carry out systemic studies on this subject. © 2018 Korean Neuropsychiatric Association

    Searching for low-lying multi-particle thresholds in lattice spectroscopy

    We explore the Euclidean-time tails of odd-parity nucleon correlation functions in a search for the S-wave pion-nucleon scattering-state threshold contribution. The analysis is performed using 2+1 flavor 32^3 x 64 PACS-CS gauge configurations available via the ILDG. Correlation matrices composed with various levels of fermion source/sink smearing are used to project low-lying states. The consideration of 25,600 fermion propagators reveals the presence of more than one state in what would normally be regarded as an eigenstate-projected correlation function. This observation is in accord with the scenario where the eigenstates contain a strong mixing of single and multi-particle states but only the single particle component has a strong coupling to the interpolating field. Employing a two-exponential fit to the eigenvector-projected correlation function, we are able to confirm the presence of two eigenstates. The lower-lying eigenstate is consistent with a N-pi scattering threshold and has a relatively small coupling to the three-quark interpolating field. We discuss the impact of this small scattering-state contamination in the eigenvector projected correlation function on previous results presented in the literature.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures.     Parallel Real-Time Computation: Sometimes Quantity Means Quality

    The primary purpose of parallel computation is the fast execution of computational tasks that require an inordinate amount of time to perform sequentially. As a consequence, interest in parallel computation to date has naturally focused on the speedup provided by parallel algorithms over their sequential counterparts. The thesis of this paper is that a second equally important motivation for using parallel computers exists. Specifically, the following question is posed: Can parallel computers, thanks to their multiple processors, do more than simply speed up the solution to a problem? We show that within the paradigm of real-time computation, some classes of problems have the property that a solution to a problem in the class, when computed in parallel, is far superior in quality than the best one obtained on a sequential computer. What constitutes a better solution depends on the problem under consideration. Thus, `better' means `closer to optimal' for optimization problems, `more secure' for cryptographic problems, and `more accurate' for numerical problems. Examples from these classes are presented. In each case, the solution obtained in parallel is significantly, provably, and consistently better than a sequential one. It is important to note that the purpose of this paper is not to demonstrate merely that a parallel computer can obtain a better solution to a computational problem than one derived sequentially. The latter is an interesting (and often surprising) observation in its own right, but we wish to go further. It is shown here that the improvement in quality can be arbitrarily high (and certainly superlinear in the number of processors used by the parallel computer). This result is akin to superlinear speedup --- a phenomenon itself originally thought to be impossible

    Peace by Piece: (Re) imagining Division in Belfast’s Contested Spaces through Memory

    This paper investigates processes and actions of diversifying memories of division in Northern Ireland’s political conflict known as the Troubles. Societal division is manifested in its built fabric and territories that have been adopted by predominant discourses of a fragmented society in Belfast; the unionist east and the nationalist west. The aim of the paper is to explore current approaches in planning contested spaces that have changed over time, leading to success in many cases. The argument is that divided cities, like Belfast, feature spatial images and memories of division that range from physical, clear-cut segregation to manifested actions of violence and have become influential representations in the community’s associative memory. While promoting notions of ‘re-imaging’ by current councils demonstrates a total erasure of the Troubles through cleansing its local collective memory, there yet remains an attempt to communicate a different tale of the city’s socio-economic past, to elaborate its supremacy for shaping future lived memories. Yet, planning Belfast’s contested areas is still suffering from a poor understanding of the context and its complexity against overambitious visions

    An overview of angiogenesis in bladder cancer

    Purpose of the review: Angiogenesis plays a key role in bladder cancer (BC) pathogenesis. In the last two decades, increasing number of publications depicting a multitude of novel angiogenic molecules and pathways have emerged. The growing complexity necessitates evaluation of the breadth of current knowledge to highlight key findings and guide future research. Recent findings: Angiogenesis is a dynamic biologic process that is inherently difficult to assess. Clinical assessment of angiogenesis in BCs is advancing with the integration of image analysis systems and dynamic contrast-enhanced and magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI). Tumour associated macrophages (TAMs) significantly influence the angiogenic process and further research is needed to assess their potential as therapeutic targets. A rapidly growing list of non-coding RNAs affect angiogenesis in BCs, partly through modulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) activity. Vascular mimicry (VM) has been repeatedly associated with increased tumour aggressiveness in BCs. Standardised assays are needed for appropriate identification and quantification of VM channels. Summary: This article demonstrates the dynamic and complex nature of the angiogenic process and asserts the need for further studies to deepen our understanding
